Balkan Travel: Visiting North Macedonia
North Macedonia, my homeland, small but enchanting, incredibly beautiful, picturesque, and magical. No Balkan travel is complete without a tour of the enchanting Roman ruins and stunning landscapes of North Macedonia. This is a country worth visiting: in early spring when nature awakens, and blooms like in a fairytale or in late autumn when everything turns golden as if gilded. They say it is the pearl of the Balkans, nestled in the heart of the peninsula, where ancient history, natural beauty, and the warmth of its people come together in a welcoming embrace.
North Macedonia: Strategic Significance and Natural Treasures
In the past, this land held a strategic position due to its geographical location. One of the most famous Roman roads passed through it, making it an important transit point. The natural treasures of North Macedonia place it among the countries with the most mountains, as well as the oldest lake in Europe – Lake Ohrid. The fertile Macedonian soil produces some of the strongest opium plants, and Macedonian mines hide many secrets and valuable natural elements and treasures.
A Land of Ancient Intelligence and Faith
The ancient Macedonians were an intelligent people, as evidenced by one of the oldest observatories in the world, Kokino. This Bronze Age archaeological site is ranked by NASA as the fourth oldest observatory in the world. Many saints have passed through Macedonia, leaving strong evidence of the culture and history of this land, as well as faith and religion.
Additionally, the region is home to the ancient city of Stobi, an important archaeological site showcasing well-preserved mosaics, a theater, and Roman-era ruins. The Macedonian landscape is dotted with medieval monasteries, such as the Monastery of St. Naum and the Monastery of Treskavec, each offering a glimpse into the rich religious heritage and breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. North Macedonia’s cultural tapestry is further enriched by the traditional craft of filigree jewelry-making, a skill passed down through generations and still practiced today, reflecting the intricate artistry and heritage of the region.

Bitola, known as the city of consuls, carriages, pianos, and Heraclea, the city of Shirok Sokak and the Clock Tower… Bitola is the second largest city in North Macedonia, a city with an undeniably rich history and culture.
The people of Bitola, proud of their hometown, claim that every small alley, street, and hidden shop is just a small piece of a grand and magnificent mosaic of a rich historical story. For this majestic city, Evliya Çelebi wrote that the rich civilization and cosmopolitan spirit of Bitola existed centuries before its modernization.
The Clock Tower is one of the oldest and most significant landmarks of the city. According to stories told by the old inhabitants of Bitola, the Clock Tower was built during the same period as the nearby Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius, in the 1830s.
Bitola is more than its historic landmarks; it is a city where time seems to stand still, allowing visitors to experience the romance and charm of a bygone era.
