Samba, carnival, capoeira, coffee, Copacabana… for many of us, these words define Brazil. Welcome to the best things to do in Ilha Grande, Brazil.
Brazil is synonymous with energetic dances, powerful martial arts, and rich, flavorful coffee. Along with the dynamic Rio de Janeiro, with its long sandy beaches, the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, and the incredible Amazon Rainforest, often called the lungs of Mother Earth, Brazil is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular places on the planet. At least, for me, as I fall in love with its beauty every day.
In February, Brazil comes alive with the spirit of carnival—a fascinating explosion of rhythm, vivid colors, dance, and millions of festive people. Brazil is all of this and so much more. It takes time to see, feel, taste, and immerse oneself in the multitude of Brazilian wonders, places, and flavors. And those flavors, that’s a story on its own.
Best Things to do in Ihla Grande
Discovering Ilha Grande
Ihla Grande offers a long list of fun activities, along with the serenity and natural beauty to match. As you discover all the things to do in Ilha Grande, prepare for a personal connection with exquisite nature, away from the concrete jungles of the cities.
A Personal Paradise
In this vibrant land, I discovered my personal paradise—a serene, tropical heaven where peace and nature harmonize, creating an idyllic escape from the chaos of everyday life.
Welcome to Ilha Grande, or the Big Island, situated along the stunning coast of Rio de Janeiro. This island is the perfect escape from city noise and urban jungles, offering a chance to leave all worries behind and reconnect with wild, untouched nature.
This Island paradise is surrounded with pristine beaches, crystal clear water and a horde of wildlife. As you relax on the white sandy beaches, you can listen to the soothing songs of tropical birds or play with the curious little monkeys, eager for a piece of fruit, ready to swipe it from your hands.
Trails and Waterfalls
If you are searching for the perfect hike trails in nature, look no further. This gorgeous island is a perfect match for hiking enthusiasts, with trails that promise adventure, breathtaking views, and refreshing waterfalls.
Ilha Grande boasts 13 different hikes, each one has its own unique ways and thrills. The most popular is the Dois Rios or Two Rivers trail.

My personal favorite is the hike to Cachoeira de Feiticeira, or the Witch’s Waterfall. This two-hour trek through wild scenery and bamboo forests leads to a stunning 15-meter-high waterfall. A dip in its cool waters is a true blessing after the hike on the hot Brazilian sun. On your way, you’ll encounter the ruins of Lazareto, which once served as both a hospital and a prison. It’s fascinating to witness nature reclaiming the stone walls of the old aqueduct. From the waterfall, it’s just a 20-minute walk to Feiticeira Beach, an untouched white sand beach with crystal-clear waters. A charming beach bar awaits, offering traditional caipirinhas and fresh coconuts.
Peaks and Lagoons
For those seeking a challenge, the hike to Bico do Papagaio, or Parrot’s Peak, is a must. This one is on my bucket list. This 980-meter rock, aptly named for its beak-like shape, offers the most incredible views of the island. If you’re lucky, you might catch a magical sunset. Be prepared for a nearly three-hour hike to reach the summit.
Snorkeling enthusiasts will find paradise at Lagoa Azul, or Blue Lagoon, a natural swimming pool packed with colorful fish. I had my snorkeling baptism here, and to be honest, I’m already counting the days until I can do it again.
Don’t miss Lopes Mendes Beach, accessible only by boat. This long stretch of white sand, untouched by modern life, is the epitome of natural beauty with its clear waters and palm trees—truly a slice of heaven in the heart of Brazil.
Island Charm and Local Flavor
Wildness and Purity
The island’s charm lies in its wildness and purity. There are no roads or buildings, just old-fashioned houses with large yards and hammocks strung between palm trees. This is traditional Brazilian hedonism, enjoying the small things that nature has to offer.
The heart of the island is Vila do Abraão, the main port. Here, the tempting aroma will lead you to numerous bars and restaurants serving fresh seafood. Mouthwatering! This small village is a maze of streets and shops selling beautiful handmade souvenirs. At night, you’ll be seduced by the rhythm and hospitality of Brazil, and it’s impossible to resist joining the locals in the forró, a traditional dance. Evenings on the beaches offer simple, divine pleasure, with the soothing sound of waves, the warmth of a beach fire, and a star-studded sky.
A Feast for the Senses
As you feast your eyes on Ilha Grande’s tropical splendor—the perfect reflection of green mountains in blue sea waters—your soul will find peace in the tranquil nature. The island’s aroma, the freshest scent, will remind you of the simple beauty we often forget. Nature at Ilha Grande has been more than generous, gifting it with beauty and wonders.
A Love Affair with Ilha Grande
This little paradise is worth every moment. Here, you will experience untouched nature, discover countless wild corners, and swim in the clearest waters. I believe everyone will fall in love with Ilha Grande, just as I did—love at first sight.
